Non-Traditional Burial Services

Augustus Funeral Home understands the extraordinary island that Bermuda is. With its wealth of different faiths and religions, our experienced professionals are here to help you arrange a final resting place for your special family member.

Should We View the Body

Many individuals who initially expressed hesitation have found solace in the grieving process by spending quality time with their departed loved ones prior to the funeral. It is crucial to bid farewell and fully comprehend the irreversibility of death. While the experience varies from person to person, it presents an opportunity to spend time with your cherished loved one and potentially leave mementos such as gifts, cards, letters, or other meaningful items.

Our establishment provides private and tranquil viewing facilities, ensuring a comfortable and dignified farewell for you and your family.

Burial Options

Often, the deceased has made their wishes known, and our directors will be able to take care of the arrangements for you.

In Bermuda, there are three options available: burial, cremation, or burial at sea

Burial
It provides a family with a focal point, a grave plot to go to where they remember their loved one. Burial involves using a burial plot. In almost all cases, the places where people can be buried are limited by law to official cemeteries or traditional burial grounds.

Cremation
Cremation provides greater flexibility when choosing a final resting place because there is no restriction to specific places of burial. Ashes can be buried in a cemetery or special memorial area, or they can be scattered somewhere, at sea. Some people split the ashes between different places. A memorial urn is often chosen to provide a focal point for the family.

Burial at Sea
This requires a wood casket or a biodegradable burial shroud, which we can provide. There are specially designated areas off the Bermuda coastline for burial at sea, which we can show you, and then help with the arrangements.

Repatriation – How Does This Work?

International & National Repatriation
Repatriation is taking home the body or the remains of someone who has died or been buried in a foreign land, a land that is not of their birth or that of their ancestors. There may be a personal desire for burial in their native country or the need to transport the deceased back to Bermuda.

We provide a comprehensive global repatriation service to Bermuda, as well as facilitating the overseas relocation of foreign nationals to their respective countries.

The following steps are required:

  • Removal of the deceased
  • Embalming
  • The correct casket and specialist packaging for air transportation
  • Provide legal documentation for foreign shipment
  • The air transportation to the deceased’s native land
